Nope, it was vain. Further investigation has revealed that mine uses old, hard to find, and relatively costly EDO SODIMMS, not the common SDRAM SODIMMS. Which means it wouldn't work in most computer's I cared to try it in. So I'm back to square one.

I have no choice but to dig into that unseemly pile.
